Discordance for childhood coeliac disease in monozygotic twins.

چکیده
Discordance for childhood coeliac disease in monozygotic twin boys is reported. The diagnosis of coeliac disease in the second-born twin was established by demonstration of a flat small intestinal mucosa on biopsy and a clinical response to a gluten-free diet. The first-born twin had a normal small intestinal mucosa. Phenotypic, genotypic, and dermatoglyphic observations as well as gross observation of the placenta and membranes provided strong evidence that these twin boys were monozygotic.

Coeliac disease in monozygotic twins.
Coeliac disease has a high familial incidence (McCrae, 1969; Walker-Smith, 1973; McNeish and Anderson, 1974; David and Ajdukiewicz, 1975) and the mode of inheritance of susceptibility has been considered to be multifactorial (Robinson et al., 1971). Studies in twins provide an opportunity to explore the relative importance of heredity and environment in the aetiology of the disease. Thus in mon...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS We adopted the twin method to disentangle the genetic and environmental components of susceptibility to coeliac disease (CD). We estimated disease concordance rate by zygosity and HLA genotypes, discordance times, progression rates to disease, and heritability. METHODS We crosslinked the Italian Twin Registry with the membership lists of the Italian Coeliac Disease Associa...
متن کاملCoeliac disease in monozygotic twin girls. Synchronous presentation.
A pair of monozygotic twin girls with coeliac disease is reported. The diagnosis was made on clinical and biochemical evidence of malabsorption, characteristic histological findings, and clinical, biochemical, and histological response to gluten elimination. Monozygosity was established on finding a single placenta at birth, exact similarity of physical appearance, similar blood group, and hist...
متن کاملMonozygotic twins with trisomy 18: a report of discordant phenotype.
The predicted incidence of liveborn monozygotic trisomy 18 twins is one per million births. The first case of liveborn monozygotic trisomy 18 twins was reported in 1989 and we report a second case in which striking phenotypic discordance existed. The probability of monozygotic trisomy 18 twinning and the mechanisms for phenotypic discordance in trisomic twins is discussed.
متن کاملAuricular septal defect in one of monozygotic twins.
In the cardiac clinic of the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, a 6-year-old girl with an auricular septal defect was found to have a monozygotic twin in whom the heart was normal. Instances of congenital heart disease in both of monozygotic twins have been reported by several authors. Smith (1929) observed a patent ductus arteriosus in both of twin boys of similar general appearance, size, a...
